Hey guys,

I'm new to the site and the blackfin family, I just purchased a '76 24' blackfin combi with twin 302s

I have did a few weekends worth of work getting the boat back in shape for her relaunch, which I took her out this past weekends for a test run before she hits the ocean, and after some repacking of the stuffing boxes, the second starter being rebuilt, and trying to track down a rudder or fix the one i bent, and possible needing a new heat exchanger, she will be a great boat again. So if anybody had any leads on used parts to save some money let me know

thanks, Craig

First off welcome home

A picture of your rudder would help, I beleive it is the outboard type, maybe you get in touch with 29finmav, as he is stripping a boat

That's do able. I had one similiar, straightened it out in a 40 ton press. Take it to a machine shop, preferably a marine one, and they should be able to straighten you out.

this is the boat, but i got it from a dealer in chesapeake, va...and got it for very very cheap i only bought the boat no trailer, so cheap i thought it was going to be alot wrong with it but i only have a thousand in it so far which i dont think is that bad for being out the water for 2 years and most of my cost was my safety gear total fixing stuff is about 600, I have the boat in Richmond, va now but my main use will be running out of oregon inlet and hatteras

That rudder can be fixed. Start calling around local prop shops.  I bent one worse than that a few years back when I hit a something off shore doing 25 knots. Still don't know what it was but my rudder was bent back like 45 degrees!

is there a place to buy replacement sleeve bearings? or whatever the piece is that slips on the rudder shaft and sits against the housing.

That "sleeve" is the inner race from the rudder bearing. You need to loosen the set screw that holds it to the shaft. Chances are they are pretty corroded, so something like PB Buster will be needed. Finding a replacement bearing will be as simple as matching it to the shaft size and finding the same bolt pattern.

It's not a fun job and you may end up cutting the bearing apart if it is really bad, just be careful as to not score the shaft.

I would say, just unbolt the whole thing off the stern and send it to where I just posted (so you don't have to mess with any of it), they will fix you all up

Will the rudders from a 29' fit a 24' because I think I found a set and it would be nice to put that one on and then send this out to get fixed

I believe they are different, but they could be bolted on and used instead

Hmm one rudder is pitted up and he deems it unusable but it comes with mounting brackets and rudders

I talked with cat, and waiting to hear back, she wanted a pic of the rudder, but sounded like they will be able to fix it, but I'm still thinking of buying the other one as a back up to keep downtime to a min
